Stage banter sounds like Babbs, then Kesey, Bobby, Jerry. On Phil's birthday, Phil the Warlock talking about Witches. Pig groaning? Bobby hyperventilating? In front of the Symphony Society? I'm sure this was absolutely no fun whatsoever. (sarcasm obvi)
Could there be a more perfect opener by the Dead for an upper crust ballgown and tuxedo crowd than "Hard to Handle"? I'm sure they were indeed, hard to handle. Nothing is by accident ;)
Personally, I love the slide HTH's, they're rare and different. Washington University St. Louis is weird psychedelic fire, warts and all.

Listen to a lot more early 69 shows before you rate this one a 5. Garcia is just learning how to play slide. Pigpen is incoherent and sounds like he’s in a bad mood. The jams don’t start really clicking till the end. A part is missing from the Eleven. The Lovelight is decent.
